ELECTRICAL INJURY

Electrical injuries are a common occurence in commercial and industrial construction sites. Nearly a thousand individuals suffer fatal injuries due to the affects of eletrical injuries and electrical burns. Electrocution is defined as death by electric current.

An electrical injury due to an electric shock can occur to the skin or internal organs when a person is directly exposed to an electrical current.

There are three main ways electric current can cause personal injuries:

  • Cardiac arrest (heart attack) due to the electrical effect on the heart.
  • Muscle, nerve, and tissue damage and destruction from a current passing through the body.
  • Thermal burns on epidermal and muscular tissue from contact with the electrical source.

Below are some common ways people may suffer electrical injuries:

  • From overloaded recepticles
  • From insulated tools
  • In the workshop
  • In the bathroom
  • Faulty wiring

You may be electrically injured if you touch someone with your bare hands while the person is still in contact with a source of electricity. Do not remove or touch irritated areas caused by an electrical injury. It is also recommended not to apply ice, butter, ointments, medications, cotton dressings, or adhesive bandages to an electrical burn.
